The Most Important Procedures for Your Cosmetic Smile Makeover

An ultimate smile makeover is a comprehensive treatment that can genuinely change a patient’s life. A bright, healthy smile carries weight in first impressions, in person and on video calls alike, and the confidence that follows reaches into everything. But “smile makeover” is not a single procedure. It is a coordinated combination, and knowing what each component does is the best way to understand what yours might involve.

Because these treatments interact, a makeover should be planned by a specialist. At Elite Prosthetic Dentistry, every makeover is designed by Dr. Gerald Marlin, a specialty-trained prosthodontist, so each tooth gets the right procedure in the right order. Here are the procedures that matter most.

Porcelain Veneers

Dental veneers are thin porcelain shells bonded to the front surface of the visible teeth. They can mask most cosmetic defects, chips, gaps, moderate discoloration, and minor shape irregularities, while requiring minimal enamel reduction, which makes them the conservative choice when they fit the case.

They do not fit every case. Teeth that are heavily filled, extensively decayed, very dark, or significantly mispositioned are poor veneer candidates, and a detailed analysis determines whether veneers or crowns should carry your makeover. Custom Dental Crowns

For more substantial problems, dental crowns do what veneers cannot. A crown covers the entire tooth, which lets it correct virtually any cosmetic issue while strengthening the tooth structurally, the reason crowns are standard for teeth with deep cavities, root canal treatment, or extensive old dentistry. All-ceramic options make crowns fully at home in cosmetic work, as we cover in when all-ceramic crowns are used in a makeover.

Our crowns are crafted on-site in our in-house laboratory, which has served the practice since 1985. That control over fabrication is why crowns from this laboratory have lasted 35 years and more.

Dental Implants

Some patients need to replace missing teeth before cosmetic work can even be considered, because the foundation determines everything built on it. Dental implants are the standard of care for replacing lost teeth: they look, feel, and function like natural teeth and, properly maintained, serve for decades. Dr. Marlin has placed and restored more than 3,900 implants over a 40+ year career, and in our practice implants are always a decision driven by the tooth’s actual prognosis, never a default.

Teeth Whitening

Professional whitening plays two roles. For mild cases, brightening alone is the entire makeover. In larger plans, whitening is the sequencing step that lightens your natural teeth before final restorations are color-matched, since porcelain will not bleach afterward. In-office treatment delivers its result in one or two visits; supervised take-home kits work more gradually. Deep intrinsic stains are the exception where whitening gives way to restorations, as we explain in when whitening is not enough.

Gum Recontouring

The gumline frames every tooth in your smile, and when too much tissue shows or the contour is uneven, no restoration can fully compensate. A Note on Bonding and Composite Veneers

Tooth-colored bonding has a place for small corrections: replacing a discolored filling, smoothing a minor chip, closing a small gap. Its limits are honest ones: composite resin lacks the aesthetic depth of porcelain and darkens over a limited lifespan. Some offices offer full “composite veneers” sculpted from resin; because the material cannot match porcelain’s natural appearance, we do not provide that treatment.
