Overview

What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

Dental emergencies range from genuine medical situations requiring immediate attention to aesthetic emergencies that need to be addressed before a specific event. Our practice handles both. For severe trauma or signs of infection, immediate care is essential.

Broken or Fractured Tooth

A tooth that has broken, chipped significantly, or fractured. Aesthetic and structural urgency varies; visible front-tooth fractures are typically addressed same-day.

Lost or Loose Crown or Veneer

A crown that came off or a veneer that debonded. Often can be re-cemented or replaced quickly, particularly when our in-house lab can fabricate a replacement rapidly.

Damaged Front-Tooth Restoration

Visible damage to a veneer, crown, or bonding on a front tooth before a wedding, professional event, or public-facing commitment. Same-day or next-visit aesthetic repair is often possible.

The Process

How Emergency Restoration Works

Emergency dental care at Elite Prosthetic Dentistry is structured to deliver clinically sound treatment quickly. The exact process depends on what is broken and what is needed.

1

Call and Triage

Call our office immediately. Patients are triaged based on the urgency of the situation and the type of restoration required. Same-day appointments are accommodated when clinically possible.

2

Examination and Immediate Care

Clinical exam to identify the extent of damage. Pain control, infection assessment, and immediate stabilization addressed first. Restoration plan determined after the situation is clinically clear.

3

In-House Fabrication

When a replacement crown, veneer, or restoration is needed, our in-house lab can frequently fabricate it same-day or within a single follow-up visit. Outside commercial labs take days to weeks.

4

Placement and Follow-Up

Final restoration placed and refined. Follow-up scheduled to confirm comfort, function, and long-term stability of the emergency restoration.

Specialist Difference

Why the In-House Lab Changes Emergency Response

Most dental practices send all restorations to outside commercial laboratories. Even urgent cases wait days to weeks for the lab to return the work. Elite Prosthetic Dentistry's in-house laboratory enables a structurally different response capability for emergency restoration.

  • Same-Day or Next-Visit Possible

For many emergencies, the replacement crown, veneer, or restoration can be designed, fabricated, and placed without waiting for a commercial lab. This is not possible at practices that outsource all lab work.

  • Specialist on Every Case

Emergency care is delivered by Dr. Marlin or our clinical team, not by a rotating staff dentist or after-hours associate. Continuity of care extends to emergency situations.

  • Aesthetic Emergencies Treated Cosmetically

A broken front tooth before a public-facing event requires not just function but appearance. Specialist design and in-house lab control make rapid cosmetic restoration possible.

  • Coordinated With Long-Term Care

When an emergency restoration becomes part of a larger treatment plan, the same specialist follows the case through to its definitive long-term solution.

When to Call for Emergency Care

If you are experiencing a dental emergency, call our office immediately. Below are situations that typically warrant emergency contact.

Severe Tooth or Jaw Pain

Pain that is severe, sudden in onset, or interfering with sleep or daily function. May indicate infection or other underlying issue requiring prompt evaluation.

Knocked-Out, Cracked, or Fractured Tooth

A tooth that has been knocked out, cracked, or fractured due to trauma. Knocked-out teeth have a time-limited window for replantation, so immediate call is essential.

Lost Crown, Bridge, or Veneer

A restoration that has come off or fallen out. Often can be re-cemented or replaced quickly. Avoid using the affected tooth until evaluated.

Aesthetic Emergency Before an Event

Damage to a visible restoration before a wedding, professional commitment, or public-facing event. Our in-house lab enables rapid aesthetic restoration in many cases.

When to Call vs. When to Wait

Not every dental concern is an emergency. Below is a clinical framework for deciding when to call immediately.

Call immediately:

  • Knocked-out adult tooth (time-limited window for replantation)
  • Severe or worsening pain
  • Visible swelling of the face or jaw
  • Trauma to the mouth or jaw
  • Significant bleeding from the mouth
  • Broken front tooth visible when smiling
  • Lost crown, bridge, or veneer with sharp edges or sensitivity
  • Damage to a visible restoration before a major event

Call during business hours:

  • Mild to moderate tooth pain without other symptoms
  • Lost restoration without sharp edges or sensitivity
  • Damaged restoration on a non-visible tooth
  • General concerns about an aging restoration

Not typically an emergency:

  • Cosmetic dissatisfaction without functional issue
  • Long-standing concerns that have been stable for months
  • Routine maintenance needs

Severe pain, swelling, or signs of infection should be evaluated promptly because they may indicate situations beyond a simple restoration issue. When in doubt, call.

The In-House Lab Advantage in Emergencies

Most dental practices send all restorations to outside commercial laboratories. Even urgent cases wait days to weeks for the lab to return the work. A patient with a broken front tooth on Friday afternoon is told to come back in two weeks.

Elite Prosthetic Dentistry has operated an in-house dental laboratory continuously since 1985. Our master ceramist works directly with Dr. Marlin on every case. For emergency situations, the in-house capability enables a structurally different response: many emergency restorations can be designed, fabricated, and placed same-day or at a single follow-up visit. The clinical difference is most pronounced for front-tooth aesthetic emergencies, where appearance is part of the urgency.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if my crown falls out?

Save the crown if possible. Avoid chewing on the affected tooth. Call our office promptly. In many cases, the crown can be re-cemented if it is intact and the underlying tooth is sound. If the crown is damaged or the tooth has decay underneath, a new crown is needed, which our in-house lab can frequently fabricate quickly.

What should I do if I knock out a tooth?

Knocked-out teeth have a time-limited window for replantation (typically within an hour). Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. If clean, gently rinse without scrubbing and try to reinsert into the socket. If you cannot reinsert, transport the tooth in milk or saliva (not water). Call our office or an emergency room immediately. Time matters significantly for replantation success.

Can you fix a broken front tooth before my event?

Often yes. Our in-house dental laboratory enables same-day or rapid-turnaround restoration for many front-tooth emergencies. The exact timeline depends on the extent of damage. Call our office as soon as possible to be triaged and scheduled.

Do you take new patients for emergencies?

Yes. We accept new-patient emergencies when clinical capacity allows. Call our office and explain your situation. We will let you know the soonest available appointment and provide initial guidance over the phone.

Is the emergency restoration my final treatment?

Sometimes. A well-designed emergency restoration may serve as a permanent solution. In other cases, the emergency restoration is a high-quality interim restoration that addresses the immediate need while a longer-term plan is developed. Specialist evaluation determines which category your case falls into.

Will I be in pain during emergency treatment?

Pain control is the first priority. Local anesthesia is used for any procedure that would otherwise be uncomfortable. Sedation options are available for patients with significant anxiety or for procedures that benefit from it. Our team is experienced in delivering urgent care comfortably.

Why see a prosthodontist for an emergency instead of an urgent care dentist?

Prosthodontists complete three additional years of specialty training in restoration. Combined with an in-house lab capable of same-day or rapid fabrication, the specialist setup structurally changes what is possible in an emergency. The clinical difference is most significant for visible front-tooth damage, broken crowns or bridges, and any situation where the emergency restoration needs to also be aesthetic.

Replacing a Discolored Front Tooth with a Precision Placed Implant

Some of the most challenging restorations occur when fabricating an anterior crown to fit on an implant. Not only does one have the difficulty of matching the single front tooth to the other ones in the high visibility zone, but the dentist must also ensure the position of the underlying implant is precise through accurate preplanning and placement.

Patient Was Dissatisfied With Her 'Gummy' Smile

Excessive gingival tissue, commonly referred to as a "gummy smile," can significantly impact the appearance of a person's smile and their self-confidence. When someone smiles and a large amount of gum tissue is visible above the teeth, it can create the perception that the teeth are too small or short, even when they are actually normal size.
