In-House Dental Lab in Washington, DC

On-site dental lab in Washington, DC. Hand-crafted crowns, implant restorations, and prosthetics under one roof. 40+ years of precision craftsmanship.

Why an In-House Dental Lab Changes Everything

Most dental practices send their lab work to commercial facilities hundreds of miles away. A technician who has never seen you fabricates your crown from a set of instructions, ships it back days or weeks later, and hopes it fits. If the shade is off or the bite needs adjustment, the cycle starts over.

At Elite Prosthetic Dentistry, that entire model is eliminated. Since 1985, Dr. Gerald Marlin has operated a private on-site dental laboratory inside our Washington, DC practice, where every crown, bridge, veneer, implant restoration, and prosthetic is designed and fabricated under his direct supervision. Our skilled lab technician works hand in hand with Dr. Marlin throughout every case, producing restorations that commercial labs simply cannot replicate.

This is not a convenience feature. It is the foundation of everything we do and the primary reason our crowns routinely last over 35 years while the industry average sits at five to ten.

Advanced Dental Technology in Our Washington, DC Lab

Our laboratory is not just a workspace. It houses the diagnostic and fabrication technology that makes precision prosthodontics possible. Every piece of equipment serves a specific role in ensuring your restorations are accurate, durable, and indistinguishable from natural teeth.

Premium Porcelain Furnaces

Our two high-performance porcelain furnaces are engineered for optimal esthetics and structural strength across all-ceramic and porcelain-fused-to-precious-metal restorations. The firing process is calibrated for each porcelain system to achieve the correct translucency, surface finish, and bond strength that make hand-layered crowns superior to machine-milled alternatives.

D2000 Laboratory Bench Scanner

While intraoral scanners have improved significantly, they often lack the precision needed for the tightest-fitting zirconia crowns, veneers, and implant abutments. Our D2000 bench scanner bridges that gap by creating a digital impression from a physical model, combining the accuracy of traditional impressions with the flexibility of digital design. This allows our technician to fabricate restorations with margin accuracy that meets Dr. Marlin’s exacting standards.

Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT)

Our Carestream 9300 CBCT scanner produces highly detailed 3D radiographic images that reveal bone height, width, and density, as well as the exact position of nerves and sinus cavities. This data is essential for surgical preplanning, especially for dental implant cases and full mouth reconstruction, where millimeter-level precision determines the success of the outcome.

CBCT-Generated Surgical Guides

The 3D image data from our CBCT scanner feeds directly into an interactive implant planning system where Dr. Marlin virtually places each implant in the ideal position. These digital plans are then used to fabricate surgical guides that direct the actual placement with significantly lower deviation than freehand or partially guided techniques. Research consistently shows that fully guided implant surgery produces the most predictable results.

Digital X-Rays

Our digital radiography system delivers diagnostic images at one-sixth the radiation exposure of traditional film X-rays. These high-resolution images enable better detection of decay between teeth, assessment of bone density and root health, and diagnosis of lesions, cysts, or trauma-related damage. The instant availability of digital images speeds up diagnosis and treatment planning.

Intraoral Scanner

Our intraoral scanner captures detailed 3D digital impressions of your mouth in minutes, eliminating the discomfort of traditional impression trays. The scan is displayed in real time on a monitor, allowing you to see exactly what Dr. Marlin sees and understand your treatment plan with full visual clarity.

What We Fabricate In-House

Our laboratory handles the full spectrum of prosthodontic restorations. Whether your case requires a single crown or a complete set of implant-supported prosthetics, every piece is fabricated on-site to Dr. Marlin’s specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an in-house dental lab?

An in-house dental lab is a fully equipped laboratory located inside the dental practice rather than at a separate commercial facility. At Elite Prosthetic Dentistry, our on-site lab allows Dr. Marlin and our technician to design, fabricate, and adjust crowns, bridges, implant restorations, and prosthetics without sending work to an outside lab.

How does an in-house lab improve the quality of my dental work?

When the prosthodontist and lab technician work side by side, every restoration is crafted to the doctor's exact specifications. Our technician can match your natural tooth shade, shape, and translucency in real time, make chairside adjustments during your appointment, and verify the fit under a microscope before delivery. This level of direct collaboration is impossible with a commercial lab.

Will my crowns or restorations be completed faster with an on-site lab?

Yes. Because there is no shipping back and forth to an outside lab, turnaround times are significantly shorter. Same-day adjustments, shade corrections, and staining can be performed during your visit, which means fewer appointments and faster completion of your treatment.

How long do crowns made in your lab last compared to other crowns?

Our hand-layered porcelain crowns routinely last over 35 years, compared to the industry average of five to ten years for mass-produced or milled crowns. This longevity comes from the quality of materials, the precision of fit verified under microscope, and the custom layering technique used by our technician.

What materials does your dental lab use?

We use premium-grade porcelains selected from six top porcelain systems, precious metal alloys for porcelain-fused-to-metal restorations, and high-strength zirconia for all-ceramic options. Each material is chosen based on the specific functional and esthetic demands of your case.

What technology does your dental lab use?

Our lab is equipped with two high-performance porcelain furnaces, a D2000 bench scanner for precise digital impressions, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for 3D surgical planning, an intraoral scanner, and digital X-ray systems. These technologies work together to produce restorations with exceptional fit and esthetics.

Do you use CBCT scans for dental implant planning?

Yes. Our Carestream 9300 CBCT scanner produces highly accurate 3D images of the jawbone, nerves, and sinuses. These scans allow Dr. Marlin to virtually plan implant placement in one-millimeter increments and generate surgical guides for the most precise implant positioning possible.

What is the difference between a milled crown and a hand-crafted crown?

A milled crown is cut from a solid block of material by a machine, which limits the ability to replicate natural translucency, color gradation, and surface texture. A hand-crafted crown is built layer by layer using multiple shades of porcelain, resulting in a restoration that closely mimics the depth and lifelike quality of natural enamel.

Can your in-house lab handle full mouth reconstruction cases?

Absolutely. Full mouth reconstruction is one of our core specialties. Our on-site lab allows us to fabricate, try in, and refine every restoration in a coordinated sequence, ensuring that all pieces work together for proper bite alignment, function, and esthetics across the entire mouth.

Does having an in-house lab reduce the cost of dental restorations?

Having an on-site lab eliminates the markup and shipping costs associated with outsourcing to commercial laboratories. While our focus is always on quality over cost-cutting, the direct relationship between our prosthodontist and lab technician does create efficiencies that benefit patients financially.

Replacing a Discolored Front Tooth with a Precision Placed Implant

Some of the most challenging restorations occur when fabricating an anterior crown to fit on an implant. Not only does one have the difficulty of matching the single front tooth to the other ones in the high visibility zone, but the dentist must also ensure the position of the underlying implant is precise through accurate preplanning and placement.
